Ahmedabad Metro

The Ahmedabad Metro is operated by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation. Two lines currently run: the Blue Line from Vastral Gam to Thaltej, and the Red Line from Motera Stadium to APMC. An extension north towards Gandhinagar and GIFT City has opened in phases; check the current network before travel. Stations are modern, clean and wheelchair-accessible. The metro is the fastest way to cross the city, especially during peak hours when roads are congested. It connects major points such as Kalupur railway station, the old city, Ashram Road, and the western suburbs.

Trains run from early morning until late evening; frequencies vary by time of day. Tickets can be bought at stations or via a smart card. The metro is air-conditioned, which is a relief during the hot months from March to June. For long east-west or north-south journeys, the metro is the most efficient choice. Avoid it for short hops where walking or an auto is quicker. Always check the current network map online before planning a trip, as extensions are being added.

BRTS buses (Janmarg)

Ahmedabad's Bus Rapid Transit System, known as Janmarg, runs dedicated bus lanes on key corridors. Buses are frequent, especially on the main routes, and stops are spaced about every 500 metres. The system covers areas such as Ashram Road, SG Highway, and the eastern parts of the city. Boarding and alighting are at designated stations only; tickets are bought at the station or via a smart card. Janmarg is a good option for medium-distance trips that are not directly on the metro line.

It is cheaper than autos and app cabs, and the dedicated lanes mean buses are often faster than cars in traffic. However, buses can get crowded during rush hours. The network is extensive; check the route map at a station or online. Use BRTS for routes that run along its dedicated corridors. Avoid BRTS for short distances where walking is faster. Buying a smart card allows quicker boarding and discounted fares. BRTS is ideal for travelling along Ashram Road or SG Highway without the hassle of traffic.

Autorickshaws

Autorickshaws are ubiquitous in Ahmedabad. They are metered, though many drivers prefer to negotiate a flat fare for longer trips. Always insist on the meter for short to medium distances; for longer journeys, agree on a fare before starting. Autos can carry up to three passengers comfortably, and they are the most flexible mode for door-to-door travel. Autos are best for short trips within a neighbourhood or for reaching destinations not served by metro or BRTS.

They are also useful for late-night travel when public transport has stopped. However, traffic congestion can make auto rides slow during peak hours. Carry small change, as drivers may not have change for large notes. For short trips in the walled city or to local markets, an auto is the most practical choice. The ride can be bumpy on old city lanes, but the convenience of being dropped at your exact destination is unmatched. Always confirm the fare before starting a longer journey.

App-based cabs

Ride-hailing apps operate widely in Ahmedabad. They offer a range of vehicle types, from economy cars to larger SUVs. Fares are calculated by the app and can be paid by card or cash. The apps provide estimated arrival times and route tracking, which is helpful for planning. App cabs are the most comfortable option, especially for longer trips, airport transfers, or when carrying luggage. They are also useful for groups of four or more.

During peak hours, surge pricing can make fares significantly higher. Book in advance for early morning or late-night travel to ensure availability. For airport transfers or trips to Gandhinagar, an app cab offers door-to-door convenience. The cars are air-conditioned and generally well-maintained. Using the app also provides a record of the trip, which is useful for safety and expense tracking. Always check the estimated fare before confirming the booking.

Which mode for which trip

The choice of transport depends on distance, time of day, and budget. For a quick east-west crossing, the metro is best. For a journey along a BRTS corridor, the bus is efficient and cheap. For a short hop within a neighbourhood, an auto is convenient. For a comfortable ride with luggage or in a group, an app cab is ideal. During festivals such as Uttarayan or Navratri, roads are busier and public transport may run on altered schedules. Check local updates before travelling.

For day trips outside the city, such as to Modhera or Patan, a private car or app cab hired for the day is the most practical option. Combine metro and BRTS for longer journeys: use the metro for the main leg and a bus or auto for the last mile. Planning your route in advance saves time and money. The Sabarmati Riverfront is easily reached by foot from many central locations. Always allow extra time for unexpected delays.

Practical tips

Carry a smart card for both metro and BRTS to save time and avoid queues. Keep small change for autos and buses. Download the apps for metro, BRTS and ride-hailing services before you arrive. Traffic in Ahmedabad can be heavy, especially on Ashram Road and near the old city; plan extra time for journeys. Gujarat is a dry state; alcohol is not sold freely. Visitors may obtain a temporary permit; check the current rules.

For travel to the airport or railway station, allow extra time for security checks. Most public transport stops running by 10 or 11 pm; autos and app cabs are available later but may be harder to find. The climate from November to February is pleasant for walking, but from March onwards the heat makes air-conditioned transport preferable. Always keep a bottle of water handy. Using a combination of modes often yields the best balance of cost and convenience.
