North Korean passport holders cannot use India's e-Visa facility. You must apply for a regular paper visa before travelling. This requires submitting an application and supporting documents at an Indian embassy or consulate in your country of residence. Plan well ahead, as the process takes longer than an e-Visa. Check the official site for current rules.

What this means for your trip

You cannot get a visa on arrival in India. Every North Korean citizen, regardless of the purpose of travel, must hold a valid visa stamped in their passport before boarding a flight to India. The application is handled entirely by the Indian mission, not through the online e-Visa portal.

The regular visa process involves a formal interview at most missions. You will need to attend in person to submit biometric data. The decision is made by the consular officer, and there is no guarantee of approval. Start the application at least several weeks before your planned departure.

Before you travel and on arrival

Before you leave, confirm your visa is correctly endorsed in your passport. Check that the validity covers your entire stay and that the visa type matches your purpose (tourist, business, etc.). Keep a printed copy of your visa approval letter, if issued, with your travel documents.

At an Indian airport, you will pass through immigration control. Present your passport with the visa stamp and your completed arrival card. The immigration officer may ask about your itinerary and accommodation. Have your hotel bookings and return flight details ready. You will be photographed and fingerprinted on arrival.

Arriving in India's big cities and travelling between them

Once you clear immigration, you can travel freely within India. There are no internal checkpoints for foreign nationals, though you must carry your passport and visa at all times. Registering with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office is not required for short tourist stays.

Travelling between cities by train or domestic flight is straightforward. Book tickets in advance, especially for long-distance trains. Some protected areas, such as parts of the Northeast and the Andaman Islands, require a special permit. Check the Ministry of Home Affairs site for restricted area rules.

Staying longer, working or studying

If you want to stay beyond the period granted on your tourist visa, you must apply for an extension at the FRRO in your city of residence. This is not guaranteed. Overstaying your visa can lead to fines or deportation.

For work or study, you need a specific visa category: employment visa, student visa, or business visa. Each has its own application form and supporting documents. You cannot switch from a tourist visa to a work visa while in India. Apply for the correct visa at the Indian mission before you travel. Check the official site for the full list of visa types.

How to apply

  1. Find the Indian embassy or consulate responsible for your country of residence.
  2. Fill in the visa application form on the official website indianvisaonline.gov.in.
  3. Book an appointment at the Indian mission for document submission and biometrics.
  4. Attend the appointment with all required original documents and photocopies.
  5. Wait for the consular officer to process your application and issue a decision.
  6. Collect your passport with the visa stamp or arrange for its return by post.
  7. Travel to India only after confirming the visa is correctly endorsed in your passport.

Documents to carry

  • Valid passport with at least two blank pages
  • Completed visa application form printed and signed
  • Recent passport-sized photographs as per specifications
  • Proof of travel itinerary and return flight booking
  • Hotel reservation or letter of invitation from India
  • Supporting documents for the visa type (e.g., employment letter, college admission)
