Character of the zone

North Ahmedabad stretches from the Sabarmati river eastward to the airport and northward toward Gandhinagar. It is a mixed zone: leafy residential streets in Shahibaug, busy roads around the airport, and newer developments in Chandkheda and Motera. The area lacks the dense historic pols of the walled city but offers easy access to several of Ahmedabad's most important sights. The neighbourhoods differ in character. Shahibaug is quiet and green, with large bungalows and the Calico Museum. Sardarnagar and Hansol are practical transit hubs, with hotels and eateries near the airport. Chandkheda and Motera are growing suburbs, home to the Narendra Modi Stadium and the main road to the state capital.

Shahibaug is the most heritage-focused area, with museums and stepwells. Sardarnagar and Hansol are convenient for overnight stays before a flight. Chandkheda and Motera are quieter, with the stadium as the main draw. The zone also includes the Dada Harir stepwell, a five-storey structure from 1499, and the Hutheesing Jain temple, a white marble building from 1848. These sights are within a short drive of each other, making North Ahmedabad a compact area for exploration.

Getting around and distances

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport is in Hansol, about 10 km north-east of the city centre. Ahmedabad Junction at Kalupur is about 6 km south of Shahibaug. The metro's Blue Line connects Vastral to Thaltej, with stations in Shahibaug and near the stadium. BRTS buses and AMTS city buses run along the main roads. Autos and app cabs are widely available. From the airport to Shahibaug takes about 20 minutes by car in light traffic. Chandkheda and Motera are about 15 minutes north of the airport. The Sabarmati Ashram is on the west bank of the river, about 4 km from Shahibaug. The old city is a short auto ride across the river.

For those travelling to Gandhinagar, the road from Motera is direct and takes about 30 minutes by car. The metro extension north towards GIFT City is being opened in phases, so check the current network before relying on it. The Atal Bridge, a footbridge across the Sabarmati, connects the riverfront promenades and is a pleasant route for pedestrians. Allow extra time for traffic between the airport and the old city during peak hours, especially in the morning and evening.

Sights in North Ahmedabad

The Calico Museum of Textiles in Shahibaug is one of India's finest textile museums. Visits are by guided tour only and must be booked ahead. Nearby, the Hutheesing Jain temple (1848) is a white marble structure with intricate carvings. The Dada Harir stepwell (1499) is a five-storey stepwell in Asarwa, a short drive from Shahibaug. The Sabarmati Ashram on the west bank is a key site from Gandhi's life. Entry is free. The museum building was designed by Charles Correa. The ashram is a short walk from the riverfront promenade.

The Narendra Modi Stadium at Motera is the world's largest cricket stadium by capacity. Guided tours are sometimes available on non-match days. The Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, famous for its carved stone jali windows, is in the old city about 5 km south of Shahibaug. The old-city heritage walk starts from the Teen Darwaza gate and passes through the pols, with their carved wooden havelis and bird-feeders. The night market near the old city mosque is a popular spot for street food after dark.

  • Calico Museum: book the guided tour in advance; no photography.
  • Sabarmati Ashram: free entry; check opening days before visiting.
  • Narendra Modi Stadium: check for tour availability on non-match days.

Who should stay here

North Ahmedabad suits travellers who need to be near the airport or the stadium. It is also a good base for visiting the Calico Museum and the Sabarmati Ashram without crossing the river into the old city. The area has a range of accommodation, from budget hotels near the airport to more comfortable options in Shahibaug. For late arrivals or early departures, Sardarnagar and Hansol are practical. For a quieter stay with access to heritage sites, Shahibaug is a good choice. Chandkheda and Motera are convenient for cricket matches or for travellers heading to Gandhinagar.

If you have a late flight, consider staying near the airport. The area has several hotels within walking distance of the terminal. For longer stays, Shahibaug offers a more relaxed atmosphere with tree-lined streets and easy access to the riverfront. The zone is also a good choice for those who prefer a less touristy base while still being close to the main sights. The old city is a short auto ride away, so you can easily explore both areas.

Carry a water bottle and sun protection, especially in summer. Use the metro or BRTS to avoid traffic between the airport and the city. For the old city heritage walk, start from the Teen Darwaza gate. The Sabarmati Riverfront is a good place for an evening stroll. The Atal Bridge offers views of the river and the city skyline. Check the current metro network before travelling, as extensions are ongoing. Autos and app cabs are the most flexible option for short trips within the zone.
