West Ahmedabad: Riverfront to Vastrapur
The west bank of the Sabarmati holds Ahmedabad's modern heart: riverfront promenades, Gandhi's ashram, university hubs and leafy residential pockets.
Character of the zone
West Ahmedabad is the city's modern face, spread along the western bank of the Sabarmati River. Unlike the dense, historic pols of the old city, this side offers wide avenues, planned neighbourhoods and a mix of residential and commercial districts. The riverfront provides a green spine, with promenades and footbridges linking the two banks. Each neighbourhood has its own character, from the commercial strips to quiet residential lanes.
Ellisbridge is the gateway from the old city, with the Atal Bridge and riverfront parks. Ashram Road runs north past Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram. Navrangpura and CG Road are the commercial and educational hub, with colleges, shops and the Law Garden market. Paldi is quieter and residential, close to the riverfront. Vastrapur, further west, centres on a lake and the IIM Ahmedabad campus, designed by Louis Kahn. The zone covers roughly 15 km from Paldi in the south to the ashram in the north.

Practical tips
The best time to visit West Ahmedabad is from November to February, when the weather is pleasant for walking. Summers (March to June) are very hot, with temperatures often above 40 °C. Monsoon (July to September) brings humidity and occasional flooding near the riverfront. Carry water and sunscreen year-round. Gujarat is a dry state; alcohol is not sold openly. Visitors can apply for a temporary permit at licensed outlets, check the current rules.
Most restaurants serve vegetarian food. Law Garden and the night market across the river are good for street food. ATMs and currency exchange are widely available on CG Road and Ashram Road. Carry a reusable water bottle; refill stations are available at the riverfront and ashram. Dress modestly when visiting temples, removing shoes before entering. The area is generally safe for solo travellers, but keep valuables secure in crowded markets.
