Staying in Vastrapur, Ahmedabad
Vastrapur is a modern, well-connected neighbourhood in west Ahmedabad, popular with business travellers and families. Its centrepiece is the lake.
What the area is like
Vastrapur is a planned, leafy suburb on the western side of Ahmedabad. The area is built around Vastrapur Lake, a large artificial water body with a walking track and landscaped gardens. The lake attracts joggers, families and evening strollers. The neighbourhood has wide roads, modern apartment blocks, shopping centres and corporate offices.
Unlike the dense, historic pols of the old city, Vastrapur feels open and car-oriented. The pace is relaxed during the day but picks up in the evenings when the lake promenade and nearby malls come alive. The presence of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) campus gives the area an academic, well-maintained character. It is one of the cleaner and quieter parts of west Ahmedabad.
- The lake is the social hub; visit at sunset for a pleasant walk.
- The area has many banks, ATMs and pharmacies within walking distance.
- Weekend mornings are busy with walkers and cyclists around the lake.
Who it suits
Vastrapur works well for business travellers attending meetings or conferences in the western suburbs. It also suits families who want a safe, clean base with easy access to malls, parks and restaurants. The neighbourhood is less chaotic than the old city and offers a more predictable, comfortable stay.
Solo travellers who prefer modern amenities and good transport links will find Vastrapur convenient. It is less suited to backpackers or those wanting to be in the heart of historic Ahmedabad. The old city is a short auto ride away, but you will need to factor in travel time. Visitors on a tight budget may find cheaper options in other parts of the city.
Getting around
Vastrapur is well connected by road. The Ahmedabad Metro Blue Line runs through parts of the area; check the current network for the nearest station. BRTS (Janmarg) buses and AMTS city buses serve the main roads. Auto-rickshaws and app-based cabs are widely available and are the most convenient way to get around.
To reach Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, take an app cab or auto; the straight-line distance is about 12 km, so the trip takes roughly 25-40 minutes depending on traffic. Ahmedabad Junction (Kalupur) railway station is about 7.5 km straight-line, around 20-30 minutes by road. Sabarmati Ashram and the old city are about 5-6 km away.
- Use app-based cabs for airport and station transfers; negotiate with autos for shorter trips.
- Metro is faster than road transport during peak hours; check the current route map.
- Walking is pleasant around the lake but not practical for longer distances.
What is nearby
Vastrapur Lake is the main local attraction, with a walking track, boating and food stalls in the evening. The IIM Ahmedabad campus, designed by Louis Kahn, is a short distance away; its architecture is of interest to design enthusiasts. Several large malls and shopping centres are within a few kilometres, offering retail, cinema and dining.
Law Garden night market, about 3.4 km away, is a popular evening destination for street food and handicrafts. The Sabarmati Riverfront and Atal Bridge are about 5-6 km east. The old city's monuments, including Bhadra Fort, Jama Masjid and the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, are roughly 5-6 km away. For day trips, SG Highway provides a direct route out of the city.

- IIM Ahmedabad campus: Louis Kahn architecture; access may be restricted.
- Law Garden: night market with street food and local crafts.
Eating in Vastrapur
Vastrapur has a wide range of eating options, from street food stalls around the lake to casual restaurants and cafes in the malls. Gujarati thali is widely available, as are snacks like dhokla, khaman, fafda and jalebi. Many places serve North Indian, South Indian and Chinese food. The area is largely vegetarian, reflecting the city's food culture.
Evening food vendors around Vastrapur Lake sell chaat, pav bhaji, corn on the cob and sweet treats. The malls nearby have food courts with multiple cuisines. For a proper Gujarati meal, look for restaurants serving an all-you-can-eat thali. Breakfast options include thepla, khandvi and poha. Alcohol is not sold in Gujarat; check the current rules for temporary permits.
Safety and practical tips
Vastrapur is a safe neighbourhood, well lit at night around the lake and main roads. As in any Indian city, keep valuables secure and avoid isolated areas after dark. The area is patrolled by police and has a visible security presence near the lake and malls. Women travellers will find it comfortable, but taking an app cab at night is advisable.
The best time to visit is November to February, when the weather is warm and pleasant. March to June is very hot, often above 40 °C; carry water and avoid midday sun. The monsoon season from July to September brings rain but also greenery. Most foreign visitors need an Indian visa; check the e-Visa website before travel. Gujarat is a dry state, so plan accordingly.
- Carry a reusable water bottle; refill at your hotel or at filtered water stations.
- Keep a copy of your passport and visa separate from the originals.
- Learn a few words of Gujarati or Hindi; English is understood in hotels and malls.
